Taking on the world

UP and coming archer Amy Paget will begin a world title campaign next week when she represents Australia at the Junior World Archery Champion-ships in Turkey.

The local archery star has been in heavy preparations for the six-day World Championship event, where she will compete in the individual cadet and team compound events.

Ranked number one in Australia, it will be the second time the 15-year-old from Mitchells Flat dons the green and gold after representing Australia at the Trans Tasman challenge in New Zealand earlier in the year.

Paget heads into the competition with a string of confidence following appearances at Trans Tasman and at the Australian Junior Nationals.

The build up to World Championships has seen Paget continue her good form in the field.

She recently broke a NSW and Australian record, she set earlier in the year, whilst competing at a Field Tournament in Fassifern scoring 364 for 24 target field.

Preparations for the World Championships have been hectic for the year 10 Singleton High student, who will sit the Year 10 School Certificate exams in November, combining school studies with training and weekend competitions.

Her training schedule,

developed under the eye of her NSW high performance coach Peter Feeney, includes shooting 100 arrows a day, daily stretching exercises as well as weekend competitions.

On Thursday, Paget will join a squad of 24 Australian archers, some of which have just competed at the Beijing Olympics, to compete at the World Junior Champion-ships in Turkey.

It will be Paget’s first major international competition with around 61 countries sending teams including heavyweights, the United States and home team Turkey.

Paget is confident of doing well and hopes to continue the good form that saw her picked in the national squad.

“I was nervous at Nationals and Trans Tasman but I think I’ve gained a bit of experience from those competitions now so I’m hoping not to be as nervous,” she said.

“I just want to have fun and just try and beat what I shot at Nationals, if I do I’ll be happy with that.”

Paget will have support from her father Wayne, who will join her on their two-week trip while her Mum, Tammy and little sister, Casey and fellow members at the newly formed Singleton Target Archery Club will be supporting her from home.

Paget will arrive back in Australia on October 16 and will have two-days rest before heading to Sydney for a two-day clout tournament to qualify for the Australian Junior Nationals in January next year.

Paget wanted to thank sponsors Singleton Toyota and Mt Thorley Smash Repairs for supporting her in her World Title campaign.
