TO have a laugh and catch some ex-Wallabies rugby union action, go to the Hunter Valley Gardens oval on Saturday for the clash between the Pokolbin Reds and Silver Foxes.
Some union legends will strap on the boots to put the Pokolbin Reds to the test in a charity match starting at 3pm.
“In the past when we were up against the Classic Wallabies it was 17 all at half time, so we could be in for an interesting match,” explained Pokolbin Reds coach and player, Rhys Eather.
The Pokolbin Reds is made up of local Singletonians, winemakers, vineyard hands and hospitality workers and will be facing players who featured in the 1999 World Cup.
“It’s about having fun and helping others at the same time and with some standout local names in the Reds, people will have a great day,” explained Mr Eather.
The Pokolbin Rugby Club is raising money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Concord Hospital.
The Silver Foxes have been involved in a number of gala matches to help raise funds for the rugby union charity - Hearts in Union. Hearts is a charity where ex-players and supporters can help those who’ve had extreme misfortune playing the game.
The charity match is not the only highlight of the day as there is a full program of events lined up. It all starts with the Silver Foxes helping out with a junior coaching clinic at 11am, which Mr Eather said will be a great opportunity for young locals to get some tips.
“Because we have access to the Silver Foxes the participants will have more time to spend with the ex-wallabies as they will be scattered across stations,” he said.
There is a full barbecue and bar opening at 11am, VIP marquee tickets, jumping castle and face painting available and the Hunter Wildfires under 15’s will kick off at 1.30pm.
The surroundings, weather forecast, rugby action and entertainment arranged for this charity event have set the scene for a fantastic day.
