JASON Doyle and Singleton’s Lyneece Garland will be flying the flag for Australia this weekend in the Wife Carrying World Championships in Finland.
The two are currently over in the small Finnish village of Sonkajarvi, enjoying the festivities surrounding the world championships.
They will be competing against 44 other teams from countries such as Finland, Estonia, China, Japan, Lithuania, USA, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Kenya, Italy and Great Britain.
Before leaving, Ms Garland said the pair was aiming for a podium position, and according to the bookmakers, they are in with a good chance of achieving this.
The Australian pair has been installed as equal third favourites to win the event this weekend.
The couple are rated an $8 chance for the title and are ranked behind only the two Estonian couples, a country that is traditionally strong in the sport.
Raging hot favourite for the title is Madis Uusorg and his partner Inga Klauson, who finished first in last year’s event.
Madis Uusorg and his brother Margo have between them won seven of the last eight world titles, and are responsible for the introduction of the now commonly used carrying technique, the Estonian carry.
The world champions will receive the equivalent of the wife’s weight in beer, a bag full of wife carrying products and trophy.
Mr Doyle and Ms Garland won the right to represent Australia at the event after winning the Australian Championships that were held at Countryfest in Singleton in April.
