DESPITE the short notice, the 5.30am alarm and the winter weather, some 50 Singleton diehards became the national faces of Singleton on Tuesday when the town went live on Sunrise.
Channel Seven’s Sunrise reporter Monique Wright discovered Australia’s reigning Wife Carrying champions were in Finland to contest the world title on Monday and decided she needed to be in Singleton to investigate the home of the event.
With the assistance of Singleton Council’s tourism manager Salena Kearney, the show was put together at a moment’s notice.
It was former Australian Wallaby Steve Merrick who took Monique for a wife carrying ride she won’t forget in a hurry.
“We became quite close in the short time we had to know each other and I would like to thank Mrs Merrick for lending her husband, I just hope I didn’t break his back,” Monique said after the stoic performance.
Tai Quon Do family, Greg and Tracey Franks and daughters, Ashlinn and Emily also gave a demonstration of their sport and Merriwa had an opportunity to explain why it celebrates the Festival of the Fleeces.
Ms Kearney said it was a great opportunity to raise the profile of Singleton both in terms of a place to visit and a place to live.
As for those who made the effort to be at the showground for the filming, it was a laugh a minute and everyone enjoyed their fifteen seconds of television fame.
