Bush fire advice on offer

19/09/2008 2:44:00 PM
FIRE season is underway and residents are being urged to prepare their properties for the season and to help them along the NSW Rural Fire Service is holding an open day on Saturday.

There will be displays, demonstrations and plenty of volunteers on hand to answer any questions. The kids will enjoy being able to have a look at the fire trucks and jump on board to check out how it is done.

Fire Mitigation Officer Hunter Valley Keith Lobb said that it is an opportunity for the whole family to learn about fire safety and for residents to protect their property and assets.

“People should come along to learn about preparing their property because we have had so much rain there is a large potential for grass fires this season, so adequate fire breaks are essential,” he said.

Ensuring that machinery sheds, stock sheds, feed sheds and pump sheds have plenty of cleared space around them will help protect equipment if a fire does come through a property.

For Bulga Rural Fire Brigade captain Len Maclachlan the open day also provides an opportunity for young people to have a look at what the Rural Fire Service is all about.

“They will see that it is something men and women can get involved in and even provides a great opportunity for couples to do something for the community together,” he said.

Broke, Bulga, Darlington and Jerrys Plains Brigades will be opened from 10am to 2pm this Saturday.
